Phaelle carrying Alni in her arms was an awkward sight, given Alni was around the same height as the vampire, plus three inches. David, Seva and the 'ghost' followed behind. In the fog, they had to stay close together.

Alni leaned up to Phaelle's elven ear and whispered, "What were you offering?"

Phaelle squinted about, trying to make her way through the fog... though she admitted to herself that the fog was quite disorienting her. "My blood." she whispered to Alni, for her ears only. "You've seen how quickly my wounds sealed up. Drinking vampire blood could help you recuperate so that in an hour, you would most probably be feeling fit enough to help in a fight."

"There are considerable dangers though." she explained, gracefully stepping over gnarled tree roots while her entourage stumbled about (except for the 'ghost'). "You won't feel like yourself... Bloodlust, taken to an extreme. But, more importantly, if you are slain... that very same blood healing your wounds will raise you as an undead like me."

The threat of turning into a vampire instead of turning into a zombie was perhaps trivial in these troubled times... but it was nonetheless important in Phaelle's eyes. She really didn't wish that fate for Alni.

"You will not like it." she continued. "For a span of time, you'll feel more... alive... but that will just be an illusion. After the healing process, your lifeforce will fight off the demon's blood and that will make you feel very bad.

Finally, Phaelle set Alni down comfortably between some tree roots. It was obvious that until the fog cleared up, she would not be able to find her way - no doubt it could be a swamp enchantment of a sort so the swamp witch would insure her privacy. She fondled Alni's hair, caressed the half-elf's pointed ear with the tip of her fingers, and smiled sadly.
"Alni." Phaelle said, her voice gentle. "Katela is trapped and probably suffering. I am offering you this choice because Katela is - no doubt - a very close friend to you. You need to think you can make a difference for your friend. The choice is yours."

Alni looked over the swamp, at least what she could see. Even after the fog had passed, it was hazy and oppressive. "I would do anything for Katela," she said. "We can't take our time finding her, who knows what they'll do. It'll take me too long to recover otherwise," Alni met Phaelle's crimson eyes, her own were resolute. She had no doubts of what she wanted to do. "I'll do it for Katela."

In a quicksilver change of mood, Phaelle brought her left wrist before her mouth and her fangs gnashed at her own wrist. She made a tear wide enough so that regeneration would not be immeditate and offered it to Alni. The vampire's blood swelled out from the torn skin. Phaelle gave a silent nod... though inside, part of her was chilled beyond the cold of the grave. Don't make her be the first vampire I create... please...

Alni gasped as Phaelle ripped open her own flesh, but she didn't back away. Alni took Phaelle's wrist, hesitantly bringing it to her mouth, gold eyes darting from Phaelle's to her wrist. The half-elf placed her mouth around the wound and got a mouthful of cold, metallic vampire blood. Alni wanted to spit it out, but she forced herself to drink, for Katela's sake.

The thick liquid slid down her throat, making her gag, but she kept sucking on the wound. After a mouthful, she pushed Phaelle's wrist away. It had to be enough. She forced it down and wiped her mouth with her sleeve. Hopefully she didn't vomit it back up.

It didn't take long. As soon as it was absorbed, the blood went to work. Warmth flooded her and from the inside out, she became energized. Whatever sickness was still within her was eradicated. The bite on her leg and all the scratches and bruises she sustained started healing. After a moment's rest, Alni hopped to her feet. "Well, let's go! We can't waste a single moment!"

If Albedo had been surprised, he didn't show it. Well, it was to be expected of vampire blood. Of course, if Alni died, she would become an undead, and judging by the way that vampire was acting, it might put the woman over the edge. "I guess not..."

He finally answered, perking his ears slightly to try to pick up anything in the fog. Cursed witch. He would skin her alive. Well, probably not. But she was interfering for to much. "Either way, this fog is an encumbrance. We simply do not know how close we are to the cabin, and this swamp is big enough that if we do not know where we're headed, we'll get lost." If he was worried about it, his voice didn't betray it. His tone was simply a matter of fact sort of thing.

David was frankly disgusted with the whole ritual, but was glad for the effects it had. If word of this got out to the general public, vampires would be hunted down just for the healing effects of their blood, or so he thought. There was obviously more to this world than a sword and earning money. He cursed his parents for not teaching him other things the world had to offer.

He stayed silent at the back of the group, his hand on the hilt of his sword. It was there incase something decided to pop out. He looked at Alni once more, and decided to keep a close eye on her when they reached their destination. The last thing he wanted was for her to become a vampire.

Phaelle swept her eyes through the small company, her face grim, and then looked back at Alni. "Wait... wandering in these mists won't amount to anything good. I'll deal with this." The vampire raised her outstretched fingers as if to seize the fog itself. "Sylphs, I beckon you to come to my aid. Show yourselves to me." The remnants of Phaelle's shamanistic powers coerced the air-elemental sprites to show themselves. The undead dark elf eyed the five spirits she had gathered.

"Lead my companions and I through this fog and retrace my steps to the cottage where Katela is held." she said. The sylphs eyed her warily, but noneless slipped away to do her bidding. Moments later, one of the sylphs reappeared and made a beckoning motion before fly away to Phaelle's right. "Follow me closely now." Phaelle said and quickly went into pursue of the wind spirit.

Alni followed Phaelle energetically. Her gold eyes were alert and scanning through the haze, her half-elven ears were pricked and twitching. The half-elf was gracefully navigating the mess of roots purposefully. It was as if she had never been sick.

The group continued on their journey, Phaelle with her powerful vampire nose led the group, Alni was close on her heels and the men took up the rear. Everyone was alert, the Silent Swamp was never a safe place for travelers.

As they passed a bog, they came into the territory of a breeding pair of basilisks. Being late in the year, their clutch of three offspring were nearly ready to leave and claim their own territories and mates. They still had a few hunting lessons left yet though. The large lizards slithered along in the shadows, following the company of warriors and waiting to make their move....

Albedo's ears perked as he thought he heard something. He glanced around, something was definatly off about this. And he had time to see a shape move up and at Alni, with lightning quickness he shot foward, grabbed Alni, and kept her out of the bite of a basalisk. He had her pressed up against him, but was looking down at the basalisk's feet. Its paralyzing stare was just as bad as its bite, so he had heard. "We have company..."

So intent had she been on tracking Katela's bloodscent, Phaelle had not picked up the three Basilisks' presence. She felt a flash of gratitude for the stranger, but it was quickly brushed away by two other hulking forms pushing their way through the swamps folliage. The vampire shot forward, careful not to make eye contact herself (she wasn't sure if an undead could be affected, but took no chances) and made a twin-palmed slam into the first basilisk, driving him back only a couple of meters has it's massive legs braced to the moist earth.

The beast angered buggle shook the ground itself and it prepared to pounce on it's new prey. Phaelle flicked her arms up, quickly invoking the Leprechaun in answer. The goblinesque spirit misted into sight and whirled about the Basilisk, weave it's power about it's crude psyche.

"Great Leprechaun!" Phaelle called, "Seize control of it's will and turn it against it's allies!" Three basilisks were bad odds for a group intent on another battle after. If this worked, they might have a chance to make an effective defense to the scaly beasts.

Once he saw Albedo grab Alni, he unsheathed his sword at the sight of the lizard, and looked behind him to make sure they weren't surrounded. He would stay at the rear of the group should one of them decide to sneak up behind them.

He knew exactly what these creatures were, having delt with them on a previous occation, and knew just how dangerous they could be. He now knew why he had to wait until daybreak to carry Alni to the witch's cabin. He couldn't imagine what an attack like this would be like in the dead of night. He breathed deeply a few times, waiting to confirm the number of beasts in the attack and their positions before advancing anywhere. He had an important position to cover, and he wasn't going to leave it behind until he was sure the rear was safe.

Alni gave a strangled yelp when a large form leapt at her and she was yanked back at once. She pressed against a warm body, knowing it was one of her companions. She saw David and Seva from the corner of her eye and she knew it was "the ghost". Alni's eyes drifted to the lizard in front of her. She didn't know what it was, just that it was about as big as she was and hungry.

It hissed at her and it's eyes met hers. Alni felt drawn to it's reptilian eyes, but before any of it's paralyzing abilities could take effect, it's sibling attacked it. Phaelle's control spell worked. One of the three younger basilisks was attacking it's own kin. The two lizards tumbled aside fighting each other.

The third hissed and snarled at David and Seva, advancing toward them and trying to catch their eyes.

The parents watched from the cover of shadows. Why where their offspring fighting? They had to step in now. The male and female adults leapt from hiding towards the warriors. In two bounds, the female landed atop Seva and before he had the chance to fight back, she heaved and breathed noxious gas in his face. The young knight choked and as the poison filled his lungs, his eyes rolled back in his head and he went limp.
The male turned his attention on David. With it's other offspring in the way, it couldn't attack him easily. It hissed and growled menacingly, and whipped it's tail against the ground. It's offspring backed off to let it's father handle the warrior. Quickly, it scrambled to the front of the group...

Phaelle bared her teeth in anger as she saw Seva fall to the basilisk female. She might have tried to rush to his rescue, but knew she was too late. In one gasp of breath, the human's life had been doomed. The dark elven vampire froze, her indecision weighting heavily on her. There was so much to do and so little time! She didn't like the odds at all. There were five of them!

While she felt certain her group would win, the odds were much more dangerous than she cared for... and she couldn't be everywhere at once! While wading in melee was tempting, there was little chance she could hurt the dense lizards with either her slam or bite attacks. No, her role here was support : she had to give her companions the breathing room they needed to act. Shrugging away her hesitation, she swept her hand out toward the younger basilisk that had skittered sideways to let the larger spined lizard up front. "I call upon the Gruagach, spirit of shadow and of hidden lives. Rise from the earth and cloak the basilisk's mind in the shadow of fear!"

Phaelle then immediately turned around and pounced over to were the female basilisk was, the vampire interposing herself between the lizard and her companions.

Meanwhile, the Gruagach, a hunched, shaggy dark cousin of the Leprechaun, showed itself. The vampire controled dark spirits best and knew the Gruagach would not fail her.
