Alni shrugged and replied while she examined her feet, "I was thinking of just telling a maid to bring dinner up here." Her eyebrows furrowed and she looked at Phaelle, "I thought only holy water would have a bad effect. How do you get clean?"

Phaelle bent her head in thought, considering her answer carefully. "It's just not every contact with water : it's having a part of the body immerged at length in it, especially running water like a river. I don't like standing in the rain much either. There's something about water, especially were it's lively, that goes against a vampire's nature - water is the origin of all life, some say."

The dark elven vampire shrugged her little shoulders. "It might explain why I don't get along with Undine anymore... As for washing, a damp towel does the trick."

"Huh," Alni musingly murmured. She pulled her boots back on and hopped to her feet. "Well, I'm going to go order dinner. I'll be back," she told Phaelle and headed out the door.

A few minutes later, she returned. Dinner had been ordered for herself. She didn't think about Dyred, but if Phaelle wanted to feed him, he could get a heel of bread or something. She'd also told the cook about her friends returning, so they would have hot meals ready, hopefully, by time they arrived. Alni's meal would be brought to her soon.

Now, the half-elf flopped down on her bed and relaxed for once in days. Her headache was fading and her stomach was gurgling with hunger. Hopefully there would be no trouble for at least a day.

Katela el'Baran wrote:
Daeira winced as she had to move about, but finally settled somewhat comfortably in David's strong arms.

Katela watched Daeira's transportation from saddle to David's arms closely, then glanced back at Phaelle. She was a little sorry for making her angry earlier, but that seemed forgotten. "Thank you, Phaelle," she replied. "I'll see you soon." Katela gave a little wave, then walked with David down the street with an stiff, bowlegged waddle.

Once they had parted from Phaelle and Alni, it didn't take long for someone to recognize Katela. An elven woman, fair as all elves, with long blonde hair and blue eyes approached them. "Katela?"

Katela looked to the source of the voice and saw one of the elves she had grown up with. "Nyla! Hello!" Katela tried to be as merry as possible, but she was in a bit of pain.

"Katela, what's wrong?" Nyla asked, noticing the way she was walking. "What are you doing here? Who are they?"

"I'll explain if you show me to the nearest shrine we can get healed at," Katela replied.

"Certainly!" Nyla eagerly replied and slipped an arm under Katela's to give her some support. "There's a shrine of Marfa on the next block over."

So, the trio were now led by the elven woman down a side street. Immediantly, their eyes were drawn to a building built of white stone, a minature of the temples in large cities. Katela had introduced everyone, and told a little of her story. She and her friend Alni had set out for adventure a few weeks ago and met up with first Tekara, then David, and Phaelle--about whom Katela didn't mention race-- and the bandits. She gave a very brief statement about what happened to her, then David, Phaelle and Alni coming to her rescue.

By now, they were at the threshold of the shrine. Nyla knocked on the door, which was quickly answered by a middle-aged priestess, fair of skin with black hair that was winged with white and chestnut brown eyes. Immediantly, she noticed David's bloodstains, the woman in his arms, and Katela being supported by the elven woman. "Oh my! Do you need healing?"

Katela and Nyla both nodded. "We three do," Katela said with a pained voice and guestured to herself and David and Daeira.

"Come in, please!" the priestess stepped aside and outstretched her arm into the shrine. Nyla still half-carried Katela inside, then sat her down on a bench in the antechamber.

"Children, what has happened to you?" the priestess eagerly asked and bent to look at Katela, tipping her face up.

"It's....a long story..." Katela said hesitantly. "David has some cuts and bruises, Daeira has a broken rib I think and me...." Katela uncomfortably leaned forward and whispered her injury to the priestess. The woman's dark eyes went wide, then she stroked Katela's red curls sympathetically.

"Dear, go to the room in the back and I will tend to you after them," the priestess gave her a comforting smile and a pat on the shoulder. Awkwardly, Katela stood again and retreated to the room.

"Now, let me see miss Daeira..." The priestess said, turning to David and Daeira.

David cautiously set Daeira down on the same bench Katela had just left and began fussing over her wrinkled clothes.

"There. Err... I'll go shrug off my armor outside so you to can have some... well, time to look at that." He said, rubbing the itchy crusty wound on his scalp a bit before heading out.

He sat on the shrines stais outside and began unbuckling the straps to his leather armor. To tell the truth, he wasn't ~that~ hurt. His wounds hadn't been all that bad to start with, and they now only felt a bit sore. Sure, a healing prayer might make him feel better, but in his years as a mercenary, he had learned to rough it since a warrior didn't always have a divine healer handy.

Still, for all they had went through, they had survived this far. It was more than David could expect of his family, involved as they had been in Valis' desruction.

Normaly, he'd probably be thanking Falis for watching over him, but, in the light of the recent events, the thankful prayer just stuck somewhere in back of his throat. He had learned of the fall of his home city, the probable death of his folks, fought against former Valis citizen turned bandits - then their undead counterparts, teamed up with an unholy vampire and stooped to questionably honorable acts in trying to capture Dyred while letting some otherbandit get off with the remains of some dead to deal them to a necromancer.

The young warrior bent his head down and groaned. He didn't regret his actions, since it had seemed to him the best he could do at the time - but he couldn't see his parents much approving of his actions either. It'd be a long time before he could become a Valis knight. A REAL Valis Knight would certainly have done better.

A mirthless chuckle escaped him. "Who am I kidding." he mumbled to himself. "Valis and Flaim are gone. There aren't any knights left..."

The priestess tended to Daeira, while David went outside. Once all her ailments were determined, the priestess said a loving prayer to Marfa and Daeira was soon healed. When the priestess finished, Daeira stretched and hopped to her feet. "Oh, thank you priestess!" the former slave enthusiastically said, then nearly bounded out the door after David.

The priestess followed. Laying her hand on David's arm, she asked, "And what ails you, child?"

David indicated his bite scar on his scalp and a few crusty nick wounds over his arms. There was this large purplish bruise over his back from the tumble he made in Katela's room and small cuts behind his thights.

"It just stings, but I'll live." He gave a shrug. "Lady Priestess, if you wouldn't me asking, can you tell me about a kind of undead called 'vampires'?"

The priestess looked over his wounds, but her hands froze when he asked about vampires. Daeira paled a bit, apparently after meeting Phaelle, her nerves were still shaken. Nyla was still nearby and she suddenly tensed. The priestess continued her proding of David's wounds. "Well...They're a unique sort of undead. There isn't much known about them. Most were wiped out during the age of Kastuul, and today, there are still vampire hunters who make a decent living. I was taught that they were the creation of a lesser dark goddess named Kali-Ma. They cannot be controlled by necromancy and they have free will and thought."

The priestess stopped and laid her hands on David's head. She spoke a prayer and a warmth filled him as his wounds healed. The priestess opened her dark eyes again and continued on the subject of vampires. "Why do you ask about Vampires?"

The priestess visibly paled as she listened to David's story. Vampires were unholy things to her, no more a person than the other undead that roamed the land. Nearby, Nyla spat spitefully. Elves felt the same way. Vampires were the antithesis of all elves stood for, and to think that one was once an elf, even a dark elf, was repulsive.

"I wouldn't associate with such things," Nyla said with a sneer. "They are tainted, and one day, that taint will overcome your...friend. Slay her now and put her out of her misery."

The priestess didn't speak, but seemed to approve of what the elf had said. "There is no cure that I know of. If you will excuse me, I will go tend to the elven girl," she said and slipped back into the shrine.

David's shoulders stiffened for a second. "That *thing* helped us save Katela back there. I'm not even sure how we would have ever found her if it had been just Alni and I."

David turned and sat glumly on the shrine's stairs. Talking to that elf was useless. He was sure her answers would be very one-dimensional. Even worse, now one elf knew for certain that there was an undead in town.

"So," he addressed the elf, "You think I should just slay Phaelle, an undead whom has been doing damnably her best to keep us from dying? That's a tough deal."

Nyla sneered disdainfully, to prideful to admit that David had a good point. "Take care of Katela," she said, then turned and headed back out to the main street.

About twenty minutes later, the priestess returned with Katela. All the half-elf's visible wounds were healed and she was walking comfortably again, but her eyes were red-rimmed from crying. Apparently, she'd just gotten it under control. Offering David a weak smile, she said, "Let's go."

David fairly bounced up and helped Daeira to her feet. "Cheery Toad Inn, I think it was." he said smilling, putting his conversation with the priestess and the elf in the back of his mind for now. "I can't wait to get there, I'm starved for a real meal - let's hope that the inn serves something tastier and it's namesake." he joked. He decended the stairs and lead the way in the streets.

Katela wrapped her arm around David's for him to escort her while Daeira latched onto his other arm. However, while they walked, Katela clung much closer, and it was clear she wanted safety from his presence. Every time they passed a man on the street, mostly human men, and if they so much as glanced at the three, Katela held onto David a little tighter and moved closer if it were possible.

When they reached the inn, they soon found out what rooms Phaelle and Alni had rented and that their dinner was already cooking. Katela and Daeira agreed they'd rather eat in the privacy of their room, so all three were led upstairs.

At the sound of a knock on the door, Alni's ears perked up excitedly. Instead of getting up from her crosslegged position on her bed where she was eating dinner, Alni called, "Come in!"

The door was opened by a maid and behind her was Katela, David and Daeira. Alni grinned warmly to her friends as they entered.

Phaelle was sitting by a window, looking out at stormy clouds forming to the north. Her usually smooth forehead was marred by a pensive frown as she looked out, her eyes shadowed.

When the other three made their appearance, Phaelle turned her head, gave them a welcoming nod and went back to her brooding.

David walked by Alni, took a look at her repast and grinned. "You didn't waste too much time, did you?" He chuckled and walked across to the other bed and let himself fall on the matress.

"Ah, Falis knows how long I haven't sleep in a real bed!" he exclaimed, then sat up. "Is dinner going to be ready soon?" He then asked the maid. "I'm starving!"

"I'm hungry too." Phaelle whispered to herself, but she shook her head negatively as if to dispel the idea and her eyes went back to staring at the clouds.

The maid gave David a curtsy and began backing towards the door. "You meal will be up shortly, sir," she glanced about for any other comments, found none, and shut the door behind her.

Alni flicked a coin playfully at David. "You're not sleeping in here with us girls though! We got you your own room. I hope you don't mind babysitting the creep." Alni maliciously flicked another coin at Dyred's forehead.
